In 1959 I rode down the Grand Canyon on mule back. We went to the bottom and back in one day. Not anymore! You must take a two day trip to reach the bottom by mule. The price includes a stay at Phantom Ranch in cabins and breakfast and box lunches are provided. Its a great trip, but hard to make reservations. Call a year in advance. A one day trip is offered and only takes you half way down and back. Click on the graphic above to learn more about the Grand Canyon. Mule rides from the South Rim are arranged through Xanterra Parks & Resorts. Call (303) 297-2757 or toll free (888) 297-2757, or FAX (303) 297-3175, or write to Xanterra Parks & Resorts, 14001 E. Illiff, Ste. 600, Aurora, CO 80014, or visit www.grandcanyonlodges.com. It is a two-day trip to the Colorado River and back up to the South Rim. Overnight riders stay and eat at Phantom Ranch. A one-day trip is also offered which goes part way to the river stopping at Plateau Point on the Bright Angel Trail. South Rim mule trips are offered year round. Go Hike the Canyon! In !974 two of my sons and I hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. This was an adventure that we will always remember. It was big time "National Geographic Explorer" like. Maybe this sounds like an exaggeration, but believe me it is exciting and awe inspiring. We spent the night in sleeping bags at the National Park campsites provided with pit toilets. We carried our food, water and backpack stove, sleeping bags, groundcover, survival gear, pillow, change of underwear and raingear in our backpack. Our packs weighed about 40 lbs. The trip down the Kaibab Trail was about 7.5 miles to Phantom Ranch. We started early the next morning and hiked 9.5 miles up the Bright Angel Trail. The trip up was difficult and we said that it was enjoyable but it would be our last trip. After an ice cream at El Tovar Lodge we decided that it was not so difficult and started planning another trip. A few years later the whole family went. Mom, pop, three boys and two girls. We decided to go slower this time and spend three days and two nights, remembering how difficult the trip up is. That was a smart move and made the hike more enjoyable. We had experience and were better prepared. We saw two cases of hypothermia, one air lift out and a mule rescue. It is serious hiking. Good information about hiking safely in the Grand Canyon can be found at http://www.nps.gov/grca/backcountry/hiking_info/illness_prevention.htm You must be prepared and read about the information provided. Make your reservations far in advance. You must obtain a permit which cost $10 per person and $5 per night per person. It is recommended that you make reservations because only a set number of permits are given out each day. Some links we like...
